The UN Sustainable Development Summit will be held on Wednesday, one of the themes is Ecological civilization, and Biodiversity is an important part of that. While people are ever more aware of the importance of biodiversity, the problems are formidable. Is the awareness raised enough to offset the negative consequences of negligence and ignorance? This is also a question for Steve McIvor, CEO of World Animal Protection. Recently, I got a chance to meet him at the Beijing Nanhaizi Milu Sanctuary, which is a protected area for hoofed mammals like the Père David's deer. The Milu Sanctuary was built in 1985 and opened to the public in 1994. This was once part of Nanhaizi, a royal park of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Ming and Qing periods, numerous wild animals were living there. When the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Beijing, the last endemic Père David's deer were eaten and killed in China. Fortunately, the Marquis of Tavistock from Britain sent 38 Pere David's deer from his overseas herd to China. Now, visitors can see numerous deer frolicking freely and eating grass in their native habitat. It fully represents the whole life of a Père David's deer. It is not only a sanctuary for wildlife, but also a place for the public to appreciate environmental protection.
